What Is API SP? What It Certifies — and What It Doesn’t

API SP is the American Petroleum Institute's current licensed service category for gasoline passenger-car engine oils, active since 1 May 2020 under API 1509 / EOLCS. It is a defined engine-test licence — verifiable in API's own directory — not a marketing phrase, covering LSPI protection, timing-chain wear control, and ethanol-blend compatibility.
What It Actually Certifies
The "SP" letters continue API's sequential S-series for spark-ignition (gasoline) engines, following SN and SN Plus. A licence is granted only after an oil passes the specific engine-test sequences defined under API 1509, administered through the Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System.
Two of those sequences are the reason SP exists at all. Sequence IX measures resistance to low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) in turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline engines — a failure mode that became common as engines downsized and boosted. Sequence X is new with SP and targets timing-chain wear, a component that failed prematurely in some earlier-generation formulations.
Beyond those two, an SP licence also requires demonstrated control of high-temperature deposits, oxidation, and sludge; a sulfated-ash ceiling of 0.9% by mass, to protect modern catalysts and gasoline particulate filters; and compatibility with ethanol blends up to E85. Buyers can confirm any specific oil actually holds this licence, rather than merely claiming it, in API's public EOLCS listing.
What It Does Not Tell You
Here is the boundary that trips up procurement most often: API SP is a bench-and-engine-test certification issued by API — it is not an OEM approval. Mercedes-Benz 229.x, Volkswagen 50x.00, BMW LL-0x, and GM dexos are separate, dated approvals issued directly by the vehicle manufacturer. None of them can be inferred from the API donut on a drum label, and a supplier stating "API SP" tells you nothing about whether the oil also holds any of those OEM marks — that has to be checked independently.
A few narrower things API SP does not cover. It says nothing about base-oil group (I through V) or which viscosity grade fits a given engine — those live in the oil's own technical data sheet. It is fuel-economy silent on its own; that signal belongs to the separate ILSAC Starburst or Shield mark, not the API symbol. It applies only to gasoline "S"-series oils and has no bearing on diesel "C"-series categories like CK-4 or FA-4. And newer is not automatically better for every application: SP is the current-generation gasoline category, but some older or flat-tappet engine designs are specified for earlier oil chemistries, not the newest one.
One more boundary worth knowing: API does not just issue the licence and walk away. Under its Aftermarket Audit Program, API buys licensed oils off retail shelves worldwide and lab-tests them against each licensee's filed formulation — over 8,600 samples checked since 2014.
