What certification should a brake-pad supplier hold?

UN/ECE Regulation No. 90 (ECE R90) is the primary type-approval standard governing replacement brake pads, linings, discs and drums in the EU, GCC and many other UNECE-aligned markets. A genuinely ECE R90-approved product carries a unique approval number stamped on the backing plate and referenced on the packaging (format similar to "E1 90R-" followed by a number) — ask for the actual type-approval certificate and confirm the number matches what is physically marked on the product, not just a claim in the description. Do not accept "certified" as a standalone claim without the certificate and matching part marking (verify per supplier and per shipment).

What else should a buyer ask?

• Friction material composition (ceramic / semi-metallic / low-metallic NAO) and how it matches the target vehicle's braking demands and market preference.
• Dynamometer test reports showing friction performance versus OE tolerance, if the market requires OE-match claims.
• Whether packaging is tamper-evident and sealed, which is part of the ECE R90 compliance expectation.
• The cross-reference system used for cataloguing (for example the European WVA numbering system or the US FMSI D-number system) — useful for application matching, but confirm accuracy against the supplier's own catalogue.

Export and regulatory notes

Many destination markets, including GCC states, apply ECE R90 (or an equivalent national adoption) as a mandatory market-access requirement for replacement brake friction products — confirm current requirements per destination before committing to an order. Asbestos-free status should never be assumed; request the supplier's material declaration where relevant to the destination market.
